Slicing egg shells advice

I want to do a French Laundry recipe for our gourmet dinner this Saturday. This dish is a egg custard baked inside the egg shell. It says if I don't have a egg shell cutter to use a serrated knife and just saw away carefully. I've never tried this before, is it as easy as it says? Anything thing I need to watch out for?
