How can I slice crusty bread without making such a mess?

bmorecupcake | Mar 3, 201507:46 PM     42

I love crusty bread, but I always dread slicing it. Crumbs fly everywhere. I try to slice my bread outside, but it's been far too cold this winter for that. Does anyone have a secret to solve this issue? Will I just have to get over my crumb-phobia? (I've even thought about a contraption like what Alton Brown built to scale fish. Remember that one?)

I don't like to buy presliced bread because I prefer not to keep my bread in a plastic bag. I just keep my loaves cut side down on a cutting board. That way the crust keeps its "integrity" and I have a choice on whether or not I want to toast my bread. By slicing and placing in a plastic bag, I feel like I am forced to toast my bread.
