? about Sir Gawain's cake with cranberries

I've never cooked or baked anything with fresh cranberries and I wanted to try this cake recipe with them. They seem super tart and I'm wondering if I'm supposed to just throw them in like blueberries, if I should add additional sugar, or if they need to be simmered in sugar and water first. I read the posting down the page a bit about using cranberries but I wanted to make sure before my attempt. Thanks, C-
