Sinplicity Cafe

I live in the Crystal City area and have been wishing for an alternative to Starbucks. My wish is now granted - and then some.

Sinplicity Cafe recently opened at the corner of 23rd and Eads St and it is a great newcomer to the area. In addition to the usual coffee/tea drinks, they also have delicious ice cream and sorbets (the original business is the ice cream/sorbet business -- they provide gourmet frozen treats to Sutton Place Gourmet and a number of high-end restaurants in the area), and the brunch this past Sunday was delightful (and a bargain - $7 for the best belgian waffles with strawberries I have had in a long time). My husband couldn't stop talking about the chocolate sorbet after a recent visit.

Even more notably, they just received their liquor license. They have a nice selection of reasonably priced wines by the glass and by the bottle. This isn't the place to find rare top-of-the-line wines, but is the perfect choice for a tasty off-the-beaten-path $5-7 glass.

I talked with the owner a bit over the weekend - they are trying to make this into a grown-up coffee shop. He said that weekend business was really good, but the weeknights are still a bit slow.

If you are in the area I'd recommend stopping in for a drink or ice cream -- either to go or to stay and linger over a game of chess or checkers. It will be worth your while.

(I know I sound like I'm working for them, but I promise you I'm not - I'm just a local resident who believes in supporting quality businesses in our neighborhood.)
