In a city where its hawker food is dominated by Hokkien and Teochew delicacies, finding Teochew kuehs (steamed cakes) is relatively easy in Singapore. And one of my happy hunting ground for Teochew goodies is definitely Tiong Bahru Market & Food Centre.
My visit last Sunday covered the following two stalls:
Ku Chye Kueh: steamed rice cakes with chives, dried shrimp and garlic filling. These are usually drizzled with sweet dark molasses and chilli paste before serving.
Pink-coloured P'ng Kueh (steamed rice cakes with glutinous rice, peanuts & dried shrimp filling) and Orh Tau Kueh (steamed cakes with mung bean and black-eyed peas filling).
Chye Tow Kueh (pan-fried radish cake) and Soon Kueh (steamed rice cake with shredded Chinese turnips/jicama & dried shrimp filling), served with thick dark soysauce and spicy chilli paste.
