I'd always like Guan Hoe Soon restaurant ever since it was recommended to me by the president of the Gunong Sayang Association (the cultural/performing arts group of the Peranakan/Baba-Nyonya community in Singapore) over 20 years ago.
And located in Singapore's Peranakan heartland Katong-Joo Chiat, it offers those hard-to-prepare Nyonya dishes which are both labor-intensive and consisted of hard-to-find ingredients (can you ever even find buah keluak in Cold Storage or NTUC these days?!)
Guan Hoe Soon may not make the best Ayam Buah Keluak (the honor goes to Peranakan Inn in Katong), Nyonya Lam Mee (also trumped by Peranakan Inn here) or Itik Tim (I personally preferred the version at Ivin's in Bukit Timah), but it comes up tops in most other traditional Peranakan-Nyonya dishes: its Bakwan Kepiting soup was to-die for, Otak-otak, Ikan Assam Pedas, Nyonya Chap Chye, Babi Pongteh, etc.
Our dinner last night, where we had the usual suspects, certainly did not disappoint! Every dish was perfectly cooked :-)
Just sharing pics of some of the dishes we had:
- Acar timun (spicy cucumber salad with boiled chicken livers/gizzards in sambal belachan dressing)
- Otak-otak, the spicy custardy fish souffle
- Ayam Buah Keluak (spicy chicken casserole)
- Babi Pong Teh (pork stew)
- Nyonya Lam Mee (noodles)
- Crabmeat omelette
