This smallish but well-stocked food kiosk run by one of Singapore's leading Nyonya food purveyors, PeraMakan, is a gem of a food find along Orchard Road. Nyonya food, despite being perhaps Singapore's most indigenous cuisine - an amalgamation of Chinese and Malay-Indonesian cooking perfected over centuries - is surprisingly hard-to-find in Orchard Road, with its plethora of Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Western-style food outlets.
PeraMakan has remedied the situation somewhat, with its selection of "Nyonya bakchang", "apom berkuah", durian-scented "bika Ambon" and other casual snacks. My fave were:
- Ayam Kleo pie: very tasty spiced chicken in shortcrust pastry.
- Babi Pongteh pie: this pie has a filling of pork belly stewed in fermented beanpaste and spices.
- Pang Susie: the version here is a bit unusual and different from the Portuguese-Eurasian version in Singapore/Malacca with potato-pastry. PeraMakan's version are soft buns with coriander-scented minced pork-candied wintermelon filling, similar to "Nyonya bakchang" filling.
All very tasty. One can also opt for a more substantial meal from the selection of hot, cooked Nyonya food available at the serving counter.
