Siena Trattoria Pizzeria Wilmington, NC

My husband and I met friends and their small children at Siena Trattoria Pizzaria tonight for dinner. It's located at the new Courtyard at Masonboro, a door or so down from Mason's Haunt. We were very pleased with our experience there. The atmosphere is very pleasant - it's between formal and informal - just very comfortable and aesthetically pleasing with a nice warm wall color and good artwork, comfortable tables and booths. Fairly quiet, but still kid-friendly. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful and was really nice about bringing out food for the kids very quickly so they wouldn't get too hungry. It was a very welcoming atmosphere.

The bread and olive oil was excellent. Chewy, flavorful bread with an obviously good quality olive oil for dipping. I ordered a the boglonese, which came with a salad. The greens were fresh and flavorful, and dotted with some really good sun-dried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, and mozarella cheese. A really good balance of ingredients. My husband ordered the Pizza Bianca, and I have to say it's probably the best pizza I've had in Wilmington. It had exactly the crust that I like - very thin and crisp, but chewy. The cheese on it was perfectly balanced, not too heavy on the garlic and oil and just really delicious. My husband ate himself silly. I liked my pasta bolognese, although it was just a tad watery and not as creamy as I would have liked. I think maybe the pasta should have been drained a little longer. It was still flavorful, though, and very good. One of our friends ordered the lasagna - he says that's kind of his litmus test for Italian places - if they can't do a decent lasagna, forget it. He said he'd give it a 7 out of 10. He said it was pretty good. Our other friend ordered a calzone and liked it, but took half home - it was a very generous portion.

Wine list was good, as was the beer selection. A moderate number of selections priced fairly well. We felt like we got what we paid for for dinner. Prices were moderate, and the portion size was generous without being obscenely huge.

Overall, we were very happy with the evening. Between this place, Mason's Haunt, and Dan's Mason Bistro, there's an excellent selection of great places for lunch and dinner in that area of town. Great for us when we're down at the marina right down the road.
