Finally got around to trying the American Grill on Forest Ave. I live in Forest Hills now but find myself on SI frequently for one thing or another as I grew up there.
The food was top-shelf and included the best lobster bisque (for those of us who like the smooth variety) I've ever had. And they make a dandy cosmopolitan too. Dinner last week was a falling off the bone pork osso bucco and a perfect creme brulee.
I went back there today at lunch time for another dose of the bisque and decided to make a meal by getting oysters Rockefeller also. When they arrived, I found several cold spots and just pushed the plate to the side. I was in a rare mellow mood and figured I would just get dessert and not complain. What a shock when the extremely young waiter inquired what was wrong, and then couldn't take the dish off the bill fast enough!
Next thing the manager came by, apologized profusely, asked if I would like any substitutions (I didn't) and comped the dessert! Now that's what I call service. Too bad more midtown Manhattan joints (where I do most of my chowing) don't seem to get it...
