Shrinking Farmers' Markets in Chicago

Querencia | Sep 1, 2011 05:32 PM

In Chicago we have several big farmers' markets that meet weekly downtown and many others that meet weekly in residential neighborhoods. My neighbors and I are noticing fewer vendors at our weekly local market where prices are MUCH higher than at the supermarkets; I have 90% stopped shopping there. Today I was downtown and saw that at the big Daley Center market there were only about one-third of the vendors that sold there in previous years. I would guess that fuel costs are a big part of the reason fewer folks are driving their trucks in from Michigan and Indiana.
