I bought fresh shrimp at Whole Foods on Tuesday night. I'm in SC, this was listed as NC shrimp, I'm maybe 5-7 hours from the NC coast. They were double bagged, ice in the 2nd bag, I and had them in the fridge (w/ the ice) within 30 minutes.
When I opened the outside plastic bag on Thursday evening, the smell hit me. The shrimp were taking on a pinky-yellow hue (not right for grey shrimp) and smelled so bad (ammonia), I had to take them outside.
These shrimp looked very good when I bought them. I usually judge this by the presence of green/blue irridescence on the tails. I did not ask for a sniff.
Is this my fault for buying the shrimp about 45 hours before I planned to cook them? I actually did the same thing, timing-wise, a couple of weeks ago, and the shrimp were great.
What do you think?
