Just had another great dinner at VeeVee, on Centre Street (Monument Square) in JP. This place seems to get better and better...it also doesn't hurt that we're in prime harvest season, and the menu here strives to focus on local ingredients. In any case, my DC and I started with the smoked whitefish pate with horseradish pickled beets and dilled mustard. I didn't get much of a horseradish taste but otherwise this was a delicious combo of textures and flavors. We wiped the plate clean with our bread (which is apparently from Fornax).
For entrees, I had the fish special, which was a spanish mackerel with pork and beans, a corn/chili pepper relish, and crispy onion rings. The pork was slightly spicy but worked well with the strong fish. The onion rings encircled some arugula leaves, which taken together were a wonderful balance of sweet crispiness and peppery astringency.
DC had the baked scrod with corn flan, roasted tomatoes and braised leeks. The scrod was so crispy I thought it was fried, and I mean that as a compliment. The corn flan was very creamy and not too sweet, just right IMHO. We both had a glass of the Chenin Blanc, which worked well with our entrees. It was dry but had a nice subtle fruity(not sweet) note that didn't interfere with our food.
My dessert was butterscotch pudding with whipped cream and Heath bits. I thought this was very solid, wonderful textures and rich without being over the top. My DC had the polenta pound cake with blueberry coulis, which I thought was good but just not my thing.
The service here is warm without being too casual...I just really like the very nice but lowkey vibe in this place and I'm glad they've gotten some recent media attention. Just the kind of place I hope will stay in the neighborhood.
