Another Shout Out for Maple Tree BBQ in Riverhead

coll | Mar 14, 201405:02 AM

It's been awhile for us, but finally stopped last night for some corned beef and pastrami. Also couldn't resist a half dozen smoked wings to round it all out. We were in heaven!

This was our first time for their wings, and I am hooked. Subtle smoked flavor, fall off the bone tender, a nice change from fried. These are going to be my go-to take out wings from now on. The BBQ sauce that came on the side was one of the hottest things I've even tasted, very memorable.

The corned beef could have used a bit more time in the oven, but as always the pastrami melted in your mouth. We kept picking at it long after our sandwich was gone. And the mustard they give with take out is Bauers, my favorite in the world! You don't see that most places. They have the whole thing perfected down to the condiments.

I ordered the holy trinity: potato, slaw and macaroni salad. To my surprise they're not doing the macaroni anymore; the owner told me they now do quinoa salad and other variations of the usuals which I can see with the summer crowds coming up. The potato salad was perfection. Southern style, sweet with basically just potato and mayo. Finshed that off in no time. Ended up being talked into the beet slaw. It had a very gingery Asian sauce that is making me hungry just thinking about it. Their regular slaw is cut a bit thick for my liking but the flavor is right on.

The area inside is so different now, not like a deli at all. Good seating area, lots of room, although of course you can still go across the street and sit by the river too when the weather gets nice. Another new change is that they sell local bottles of wine, beer and hard cider, so you can make yourself really comfortable when you sit down for your meal.

See you there!
