My BF and I just wanted to share my thoughts on the food we ate while up in the Bay area for a weekend getaway. First up was Bix, we had a 10pm reservation and decided to head over early so that we could enjoy a martini and some jazz before dinner. Be warned that it's in an alley--we ended up driving in circles for 10 minutes because our cab had no clue where we were going. I finally had to pull out the GPS on my phone to lead the way. Upon walking in, I immediately loved the atmosphere--the servers wear white jackets and shake every martini in front of you. There is a main dining room and a circular balcony seating on the second floor overlooking the main area. I must say I was expecting the jazz to be a bigger part of the production (no stage) but they did provide lovely background noise. We were seated promptly at 10:00 and led up to our table on the 2nd floor. Our server was beyond professional and immediately recommended the lobster spaghetti which I decided was a must for me. My boyfriend ordered the burger (not the $27 w/truffles just the regular "club" burger) and we decided to split a salad to start. After about 10 minutes our salad had yet to arrive and our server apologized graciously, had the salad to our table within minutes AND deducted it from the bill all without one peep of complaint from us! My lobster spaghetti was heavenly, perfectly cooked pasta with chunks of main lobster in a tarragon cream sauce. My boyfriend's burger however was purely TRANSCENDENTAL . He took one bite and immediately his eyes rolled into the back of his head. I have never seen a reaction like this from him about food but when I took a bite next I understood. This was HANDS DOWN the BEST CLASSIC AMERICAN BURGER we have ever had. The beef was cooked to pure medium rare perfection, completely even; topped with white cheddar and homemade tomatoes. It was so good that we asked that we both have said that no future visit to SF will be complete without one. If you are a burger fan, run don't walk to Bix!!!
Next up was Spruce. I had read many lovely things and was quite looking forward to dining here. The space itself is lovely--cloaked in buttery brown leather and dark wood. We were served grougers to start and a hot roll. I would have preferred to be served a different amuse bouche if a warm roll was to follow but both were good. Having read a few different articles proclaiming the Spruce burger to be tops in SF I decided I had to order one to compare it to the Bix burger. We also got a salad, tomato soup with burratta and grilled yellowtail with escarole and artichoke. Let me start by saying that if anything you could tell the freshness of every ingredient that was used to prepare our dishes. The late harvest tomato soup exploded with freshness as dis our salad. The burger arrived and I eagerly took a bite hoping to rival what I had experienced the night before. No such luck however. This was a fine burger but it was no Bix. They used an herb-infused aioli that was spread on the bun which for me detracted from the taste of the beef itself. It was a good burger but definitely no Bix. The swordfish was good but not outstanding. Very simply prepared with olive oil, tomoatoes, and herbs. The service was spectacular here once again and overall we were happy with both dining experiences. Now we are just counting down the days until our next Bix burger ;)
