Once a year or more we drive to Portland and we make reservations at restaurants we have read about either here, or other Portland resources. We had one repeat visit at my hubby's request. He wanted to return to Kachka. We had another good meal. As we ate with vegetarians we tried to lean most of our choices toward that emphasis. We had the sour cherry vareniki and the Tvorog Vareniki- both very good. We also had the spring Kutab and the halibut shashlik and the cabbage rolls. The Moscow mule drink was very good.
The dinner at Tusk was our favorite of the week. We had again mainly vegetarian which is easy and delicious to do at this Middle East restaurant. We had chick pea fries, a vegetarian plate, great hummus with delicious house made pita, sprouted barley, baked halloumi and our meat selection was lava beans with pork shoulder. All the dishes were great and the spices on the table were a wondrous treat to add to each dish. We ate in the back room which is pleasantly quiet unless you yearn for the "atmosphere" of high volume and excitement which all the other rooms provide. The service was kind and very good. The dessert menu was intriguing, but because Fifty Licks is just down the street, we opened for that. The ice cream was very good.
We decided to try Dame for our neighborhood dinner. It is a fairly new small French bistro type of place. The menu is large for appetizers and vegetable dishes, but somewhat limited for mains. The dishes were all good, though small. The service could not have been more peasant. The desserts are house made. We ordered the the strawberry ice cream and the texture was icy and the flavor not intense.
Our last dinner was our MOST disappointing. Be forewarned they require a CC deposit. We had a early reservation at Superbite and arrived in time for Happy Hour. We ordered bites of salmon crudo and grilled shiitake. I also ordered the house cocktail. The bar service was friendly and polite. The mains were very disappointing. The serving on both were large. My choice was somewhat limited because of my mollusk allergy, so I had lamb T-bone on fried bread. The fried bread was soggy and the lamb, though cooked to perfection was so salty that it was barely edible. I usually salt my dishes so.... My husband had the pork shoulder confit serves with a side of noodles. It too was way over salted. The dessert menu was totally lacking in seasonality. There was no seasonal fruit at all. It looked like a menu made for winter with carrot cake, almond cake and chocolate pudding cake.
We also had two lovely breakfasts at Coquine. We had soft scrambled eggs- so tasty and fresh and one day I had the veggie hash with an egg. Also had to try the apricot nonstick which was yummy.
