if u love jewish soul food, try shlisskish, which i have just discovered. apparently, the orthodox jewish hungarians have brought this treat to the rest of the orthodox kosher world, and it has become a staple, as a side dish, in kosher take-out joints in boro park, flatbush, etc. it is basically a yiddishized gnocchi---3/4 inch oblong balls of potato-flour pasta are re-fried in chicken schmaltz and onions, garnished with bread crumbs. it is such authentically-tasting jewish soul food, that i swore i ate it in my mother's kitchen 30 years ago, but further research reveals i could not have. add it to your armamentarium of egg barley and kasha varnishkes
