Shiitake mushrooms look and smell fine, taste SOUR??

I use Shiitakes a lot and have never come across this before yesterday. I had bought two packets of particularly large Shiitakes (in fact, I'd never seen them this big before either). After the first packet tasted funny yesterday (acidic, as if they'd been soaked in lemon juice) I contacted the customer services dept of a Shiitake grower today who assures me this is not something that would happen naturally as a result of a mushroom growing bigger (any size Shiitake should taste the same). I just cooked the second packet and paid particular attention to pre-cooking taste and smell and texture and noticed out of the ordinary, but once again they tasted so sour that I did not want to eat them, particularly so around the edges. I cannot find anything about this online. Has anyone here experienced this before? Is it a different variety of Shiitake perhaps (thought surely the grower would have known about this) or were they off somehow?
