I'm a Montreal native who's currently living in San Francisco.
There's not a lot to miss food-wise, but good cheap Lebanese takeout counters (and solid family-style Greek!) make the short list.
I'll be back in Montreal for a couple of weeks this fall and I plan to drive down to Ottawa with my wife for 2 nights. The real incentive for the trip is to spend a night at the Chateau Montebello. Since my wife has never been to Ottawa and I have family in the area, I decided to spend a couple of nights at the Chateau Laurier before driving back to QC.
I'm planning a short itinerary for our trip - We already have dinner reservations at Beckta and North & Navy booked. Our final night is tentatively planned for L’Orée du Bois. Brunch is planned for Murray Street in ByWard Market.
I'm currently assessing whether or not a trip to Shawarma Palace would be worthwhile as a quick take-out one afternoon. We could just as easily do this in Montreal (and Lebanese fast food is definitely on my mind for at least one meal in September) but I would greatly appreciate feedback from anyone familiar with Montreal's Middle Eastern take-out counters to determine whether or not Shawarma Palace is at all comparable. If it's not unlike the countless Lebanese pita joints in MTL (Boucherie Abu Elias being my favorite) and somehow stands apart in terms of quality and flavor, then I would consider it as a lunch option. If it's the equivalent of an Ottawa-style Boustan frequented by college kids and late night boozers out of (primarily) convenience, then you've saved me time.
