Shanghai Taste Delight - Mountain View

Wendy-san | May 27, 200201:01 AM

I had read previous posts way back in January about this restaurant and we finally had the chance to go last night. We printed out a couple of Melanie's posts as our guide.

We first asked for the Chinese menu, but the waitress could not understand us. However, we realized that all the dishes Melanie and others had mentioned are now on the English menu. There does seem to be a Chinese menu on their business card, but all the dishes seem to show up on the English menu as well. While we don't read Chinese, *sometimes* we can figure out the meaning from knowing Japanese.

We ordered Shanghai Style Wonton in Hot Pot w/Soup (10 won ton). The broth was a quite different taste than I am used to with lots of nori (seaweed). The wontons were a different shape to me but were chewy, the way I like them. We also had the crispy duck (a bit too salty for my taste) and Shanghai Style Chow Mein. Our favorite, however, was Yellow Birds, which is described on the menu as "soft bean curd sheets wrapped vegetable braised in brown sauce." The sauce was slightly sweet and the tofu sheets were wonderfully chewy.

As others have mentioned, this place is quite authentic. We have little experience with this cuisine (tending to eat more Cantonese), but found it quite enjoyable to try new things. Thanks again to chowhounds for broadening our dining experience.
