Does anyone have recommendations for local food in Shanghai, particularly in Puxi, Jing An District, as well as near the intersection of Huai Hai & Hong Qiao roads?
I'm looking for local food I wouldn't find elsewhere [i.e. not Jean George's global French kitchen empire], hopefully local Shanghai food. I can speak & read a little Mandarin, and am okay with going somewhere and trying to struggle through ordering. Some hopes:
1) Doesn't use MSG or is able to compensate for the lack of MSG if you ask them not to use it.
2) Not overly high priced. I've been to South Beauty & Fook Lum Moon, both of which were amazingly good, but are outside my budget as far as restaurants to visit with any regularity.
3) Been to Shanghai Ren Jia, Bao Luo & Mei Long Zhen. Liked Bao Luo best, but there's a really long wait, which is not always good for my family [have a small child]. Mei long Zhen is good, Shanghai Ren Jia also okay, just trying to find other options.
4) Recommendations for food stalls are certainly welcome.
I haven't finished working through the NY Times article [that's where we got the Bao Luo idea], just figured I'd try to find more suggestions.
If there was good [not Shanghai-ized] Sichuan, Cantonese [dim sum a plus], Beijing, or pretty much any other food [Vietnamese? Indonesian? I can hope] it would be greatly welcomed.
