The other day a friend who I thought was fairly knowledgeble in the cooking department explained to me that shallots are actually one portion of a green onion. The portion being that kind of pale green area between the white part and the really dark green part. I was taken completely by surprise since I have been cooking for years now and have never heard of that one. Plus her friend who has taken a few cooking classes (which really doesn't make anyone an expert) claims the same thing. When I go to the grocery store what I see labelled as shallots are the objects that look like small onions. What's going on here? Has anyone else every heard of this? Have I been on another planet all these years? Please help clear this one up for me.
