I finally got to Shalizaar yesterday for a wonderful holiday brunch. No idea what the San Mateo location was like, but the Belmont restaurant is beautiful with wonderful light and murals. Service is welcoming and gracious. The woman who took our order advised one friend he had ordered two soups, then asked if he was a vegetarian and offered to prepare what he needed.
I had a bowl of aush reshteh and tahdig with fesenjan and gaymeh. The aush resteh, like the lovely harira at Tajine, was a soup to warm your soul on a winter day.
My friend's son had a succulent chicken kabob that I demanded a bite of. Worth a drive just for this. The dill rice with fava beans was exquisite. Unfortunately we had no room left for dessert.
Earl Grey tea is served and refilled.
I would love to return with a larger group and try more of the menu. As noted, portions are enormous.
