Shakahari Indian Restaurant opens in Old Saybrook

DonShirer | Sep 30, 2016 04:07 PM

For almost a year a sign at 1458 Boston Post Rd. in Old Saybrook has been advertising two new restaurants "coming", Shakahari, with vegetarian Indian cuisine, and Himalaya, hopefully with food of that mountain region. Their parking lot was finished two months ago but until today every time I drove past their doors were locked.

Finally this noon I noticed a car in front of Shakahari and stopped in. They have a smallish eating area with a black and white decor and chairs with interesting wraps, and also do takeout. Since I had some frozen groceries in the car, I opted for some take-out vegetarian curry (plus rice) which we had for dinner tonight. It had the usual chickpeas, peas, green beans, carrots and peppers. I enjoyed the spiciness but it was just on the edge of my wife's picante tolerance.
There were more options available on the eat-in menu (including Mango Milkshakes!).

They are open for lunch (11:30-3) and dinner every day except Tuesday. I'm glad to have this promising outlet practically next door, since previously I had to go to Middletown or Branford for similar food.
