Visiting Lodi last month, I stopped at Cheese Central to see if there might be any locally produced cheeses I should know about. Not really, though a new creamery in the area will start up next month.

The cheesemonger though did direct me to Shaft's blue cheeses from Roseville, CA. I tried both the entry level, Shaft's Bleu Vein Cheese, aged for a minimum of one year and the Ellie's 2 Year Reserve. I liked both very much for the exceptionally creamy texture and full-bore blue tones. I purchased the Ellie's to take home, mostly because it has an extra measure of complexity.

And if you're in the area, check out this cheese shop. The staff are knowledgeable and generous with samples. The store has good air-conditioning on a hot afternoon.
