Walking home from watching the fireworks in Aquatic Park, I happened to glance at The Black Horse London Pub and made eye contact with the guys sitting at the bar. They waved me in, opened the door, and invited me to take a seat. Soon I was cozied up between Gabe and Matt, friends of Jake Gillis of Jake's Steaks, and eating some take-out Buffalo wings from Jake's.
Jake's wings were still slightly warm. They're good size and juicy. We had the mild and medium version. I liked 'em both and had a preference for the medium spice. Gabe said the sauce is the real deal from Anchor Bar in Buffalo. The blue cheese dressing actually tasted like blue cheese and the carrots and celery were really fresh and crisp. Gabe asked me if I liked wasabi, and said that Jake has an off-menu wasabi wing that's killer. I commented that I was afraid Jake was getting too California messing with stuff like that. He laughed and said that's why it's not on the official menu. He also mentioned that Jake has started serving brunch on the weekends.
Matt, who's visiting from Philly, said that Jake is striving for a Pat's style cheesesteak, but you can also get American or Provolone, as well as whiz. The guys weren't certain where the water ice was from, somewhere in Jersey, but they assured me that it was the real deal. I'll be trying it soon.
The guys picked up two rounds. The pub was out of its cask conditioned ale. I had a Chimay blue label served in a Belgian goblet and a Ward's pear hard cider that was off-dry and not that sweet. The pub has a deli license and can only stay open until midnight. As a deli, it offers some food, a corned beef sandwich and a cheese plate. I didn't have the cheese tonight, but the selection was Spanish manchego and an Irish cheddar with chutney, salami and onions.
Those of you who know me are aware that I'm a taster and not a drinker. So, please excuse me if any of this is garbled. Hope you've had a great Fourth!
