serving and eating good butter

sorry, this may be basic to all of you, but i guess i'll preface by saying that i come from an overweight fats phobic family, so butter has not been a major part of my life (though, illogically enough, cheese always has been).
but now, i'm eating butter and i love it.
so do you serve butter to your guests with a nice bread? and how? the plugra i've been eating deserves its own spot on the cheese board, but i've never seen that donw. and i'd be reluctant to adulterate it but what about jazzing butter up with herbs or garlic or other things? what do you do and what do you recommend?
