Seoul Gom Tang II - report

So I found myself bored, alone and hungry last night, so I thought a little Chow adventure might perk me up. I headed off for Seoul Gom Tang at the corner of Telegraph and West Macarthur.

When I walked in, I was immediately greeted and seated at a table. A woman who I think was the owner got me a placemat menu w/translations of the dishes listed only in Korean on the wall menu. She then brought out some barley tea, cucumber kim chee, and dished up some cabbage and daikon kim chee from the crocks on the table. The barley tea was very tasty -- much better than what I've had at Pyung Yang Tofu House, in my opinion.

I immediately picked up some of the cucumber kim chee, and started munching. She looked at me and said "oh, that's OK, but these (pointing at the cabbage and daikon) you should eat with rice because they are very spicy." I think she was a little worried that I couldn't handle the spice. All three kim chee varieties are made in house and were very good. (Eventually I dug into the other two sans rice.)

I ordered the cold noodles with spicy sauce which arrived with a plain broth that the server advised me to add salt and green onions to. I think it was beef broth, although it had almost a creamy taste to it -- not a clear broth, and piping hot. The noodles were rice or mung bean vermicelli with a spicy sauce that had a little bit of sweetness to it. They were garnished with slices of beef, cucumber, daikon, and asian pear, and topped with half a hard boiled egg.

I really made quite a pig of myself -- couldn't stop eating that kim chee, and the woman who greeted me checked in with me several times to make sure I was OK. I felt very taken care of, which was rather nice since I was dining alone.

I had enough noodles leftover for another meal, and spent $11.50, including tip. When the check comes, it's accompanied by the cutest little bottle of some sort of yogurt "soft drink" -- or that's how it was translated on the side of the bottle.

The place was packed when I was there, but the tables seemed to turn over quickly, so I didn't ever see anyone waiting for more than a few minutes. I'll definitely go back -- next time to try one of the hot soups.
