We were treated to an outstanding tapas style meal by a couple of dear friends last evening at the new Senses restaurant in the Tower District. The four of us shared the following small plates:
Salad of organic Dandelion greens, organic Granny Smith Apple slices, toasted Pecans with a Buttermilk-Honey dressing ~8~
Salad of Black Mission Figs, English Stilton toasted Hazelnuts on organic Spring Mix with Pomegranate Vinaigrette ~8~
Organic Zucchini Pancakes, Persian Dill and Bulgarian Feta ~5~
Empanadas of Chanterelles, Porcinis and Button Mushrooms with Mushroom Demiglaze ~8~
Grilled Prawns with Cilantro-Almond Pesto ~8~
Clams Provencal with Garlic, Shallots, Thyme, and Savignon Blanc ~9~
Organic Spinach and Cheddar Souffle ~9~
Organic Potato Gnocchi with Tomato-Stilton Cream Sauce on a bed of sautéed greens ~11~
The black fig salad with stilton was a hit even with our friends who aren't that fond of figs, amazing blend of flavors. Zucchini cakes by far the best we've ever tasted. Empanadas were golden brown with a rich earthy flavor that went perfectly with the Pinot Noir that we brought (they apparently do have their beer and wine license now but I didn't get a chance to look at the list). The cilantro almond pesto gave the prawns a nice tang and the spinach and cheddar souffle was stellar.
We were a little skeptical ordering the gnocci having been spoiled by my FIL's homemade, but they were light and fluffy as promised and matched well with the S. Anderson Vineyards Reserve Merlot, also brought by our companions.
The only miss of the whole batch was the dandelion greens, I'm a fan of bitter greens such a chicory, but these weren't tender at all and not pleasant to chew, the dressing on the other hand was excellent.
This is a place I'll look forward to returning to again and again. They have only been open for about 3 months but it's my guess that reservations may be required regardless of which night of the week you choose to go.
