For the last month or so, from the minute my friend Casey and I booked our five night visit to San Francisco from NYC, I have spent hours putting our meal itinerary together. We have very few friends in the Bay Area, we do not have tickets to any shows or performances or sporting events: we are coming to EAT. Neither of us have been to the Bay Area since we were kids.
I am unashamed to be that 23 year old millennial who already has “FOMO” about all the fabulous restaurants I won’t get to eat at. Living in Brooklyn supplies me with a constant supply of food adventures and explorations, but I can already tell that San Francisco may outshine NYC in food-fandom.
Three weeks and eight reservations later, I’m wide awake at 1am writing a post on Chowhound seeking affirmation on the outline you see below. 10 days until departure. There are some difficult toss-ups I could use some friendly guidance on, some plans that could benefit from sanity-checking on feasibility. We’re staying at a hostel that is three blocks from Union Square. Despite the rezzy’s, the itinerary below is 100% flexible and I welcome any encouragement and all recommendations.
Caveats and details: I have a peanut allergy, so can’t hit any Thai or Vietnamese (rough, I know). We’re not filthy rich. I’m still filling in some gaps (Monday most notably) and have listed some thought starters within each day. There is a slim chance that we won’t be hungover on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings. We’ll rally. I plan to consume several cortados. There is somewhat of a concern that we won’t be hungry enough to eat everything (LOL JK).
This is my first Chowhound post! But I’ve been lurking… Of course, I promise to put together a comprehensive and detailed Trip Report. THX!
Leave JFK at 3:59pm, Land at 7:45pm PST
Dinner at Liholiho Yacht Club at 10:15pm (near hostel), also holding Flour + Water for 9:30pm
Mr. Holmes Bakehouse EARLY for pastries
Zazie for weekday brunch to beat the weekend craziness?
Touristy day, waterfront walking and exploring, Golden Gate Bridge and possibly In-N-Out (Fisherman’s Wharf) for lunch - neither of us have ever had. I know.
Dinner at The Progress at 8:30 with OpenTable $100 credit before going out - gutted that I couldn’t get a rez at State Bird...
Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market early! 25 min walk from Hostel then take the streetcar to Haight Ashbury / Alamo Sq for brunch
Nopalito on Broderick as first choice brunch (CALL AHEAD), holding Nopa rez at 12:45 as backup - need help here. Which is the better brunch option?
Golden Gate Park
De Young Museum if we have time
Late lunch/snacks at Swan Oyster Depot - insane to even try on a Saturday?
Dinner toss up: Zuni Cafe @ 7:45pm (too stuffy?) or Delfina @ 8pm
Mission District for Brunch at Foreign Cinema @ 12:30
Bakery hopping to Craftsman & Wolves for muffin egg and Tartine Bakery
Split a burrito from La Taqueria for late lunch
Dinner rez at Frances @ 8pm - worth it?
Oakland day adventure (also considering Berkeley). Any must-hits? What neighborhoods are best for daytime exploring? Temescal?
Heard about Pal’s Takeaway for sandwiches in North Oakland
Dinner: wide open, preferably in Oakland
Breakfast at Plow?
Leave from SFO at 3:45 PST
Arrive in NYC at midnight EST
Sleep and only drink water for a week
Lingering questions: restaurant weeks - anywhere actually worth the deal? I despise it in NYC. Where can we get the best sourdough? Is Dungeness crab still poisonous? If not, where can we get it fresh? Long shot: anyone with a peanut allergy have any picks for ‘safe’ Asian restaurants?
