seeking advice - almond paste vs. ground almonds +sugar...

I have a mass of almond paste (from one of the large cans) which I would like to use in portuguese and other dessert recipes. Any suggestions re: rough equivalencies between this product and the blanched ground almonds and sugar called for in my recipes?
