Three Seasons vs Tamarine or other upscale Vietnamese?

I have a visitor I need to entertain from Japan, and she requested Vietnamese food. I didn't care much for Slanted Door (the waitor couldn't really describe the dishes and there were no Vietnamese written on the menu to see what we were really ordering!). Are Tamarine or Three Seasons any better? I'd take her to Vun Tau if I could have it my way, but a good wine selection and nice decor must accompany the food.

Any suggestions? Outside of San Francisco is slightly more convenient, but if there is highly recommended place in the city, that would also work.
