Call me Wishmael: Just last week, at the advanced age of 48, I had my first taste of White Zinfandel. It was an unreasonably sweltering L.A. evening at the end of a long cranky day, the A/C was broken and I was parched, so when a friend pressed a big sweaty glass of fruity pinkness into my paw ("What is this stuff?" "Uh, it's a kind of...rosé"), I didn't really hesitate...and god help me, I liked it. I liked it even better the next morning, when even after 3 big sweaty glasses I suffered no painful after-effects. NOW I find out it's this incredibly declassé white trash beverage that nobody admits to drinking, much less enjoying (okay, so I'm sheltered) - but I've gotta ask: who among you will step forward with brand recommendations? I was swilling 'Timberwood' out of a 1.5 L bottle I know came from Albertson's - hey, at least it had a cork - and now that my eyes are opened, I'm seeing at least a dozen brands on the shelves - and I'm just talking grocery stores here. So who's got a shameful fondness for this stuff and is willing to name names? My sincere thanks in advance; it's going to be a long hot summer.
