For many years, our favorite cuban sandwich came from a litle grocery in
downtown Atlanta near Georgia Tech. In addition to a great sandwich, we enjoyed the banter with the owner, an elderly expatriate Cuban. The landlord wouldn't renew the lease, the man's wife died, and he moved to Birmingham. We've missed his great sandwiches but learned that he had opened a place in Birmingham, which is not far from his son and granddaughters.
A recent bike trip took us through Birmingham and we decided to find him via Google. Yep, he has a new place in a shopping center in Vestavia Hills off Montgomery Highway, and at age 87 is still making the best cuban sandwich we've ever had anywhere, anytime, etc. His sandwich is as good as ever. If you live in Birmingham or nearby, or are driving through there, it's definitely worth a stop! His place is called Kool Korner Sandwiches, 790 Montgomery Highway, Vestavia Hills, AL
