In search of chef from San Diego

Phoenix Trip Planning In Search Of... Restaurant Intel

Hi guys, long shot here. I'm from San Diego and one of my fave restaurants about a decade ago was called Region here in San Diego; the chef then left to start a restaurant in Phoenix. I can't remember his name for the life of me...I think his first name is Michael. Any ideas for a restaurant head-chef'd by someone from San Diego? My boyfriend and I are driving through Phoenix next week and would love to find that restaurant if we could :) Many thanks in advance!
