In search of the best belgium waffle

I long for a great, melt-in-your-mouth, waffle...the kind that compels you to detour you off your trip to Antwerp, just to stop at some corner goffre stand, (as in Lille or some other small town in Belgium)to eat plain or dipped in chocolate. I remember the days when a good, crisp light belgium waffle was easy to be (now don't laugh) the Old World restaurants. Too often I am disappointed by a soggy, cold, too-much-baking-powder kind of waffle. Short of going overseas, is there such a thing around here?
