SD--new upscale dessert house in North Park

Ms Verde | Apr 4, 200612:47 AM

I've been waiting for a couple of months for the remodel on the corner of 30th and University to be completed. Heaven Sent Desserts had it's name up well ahead of the opening today.
On a lark we swung around the corner this evening at 8:30 to see if it was open yet. AND there was a parking place on University! The restaurant is upscale, modern, comfortable. Two cases held beautiful cakes and other baked item. They also had a menu of items plated in the kitchen which looked interesting.
My partner and I settled on the Hawaiian Aloha cake and the Golden Sunset. The Hawaiian had a pineapple and coconut center and a torched meringue on the outside. It was very sweet, but with the coffee, it really grew on us. My Sunset was a 2 layer golden cake with raspberry filling and an apricot buttercream. Moist and yummy. We will try a chocolate item next time.
One of the partners came to our table and was very gracious. He said they were testing the market for their AM hours. Currently they open at 7AM when they have breakfast goods, which were long gone by our visit tonight!
This place has real potential for the after theater crowd, now that the North Park Theater has finally re-opened. And those of you who have been frustrated by the crowds and attitude at Karen Krasne in Hillcrest, you should check this place out.
Prices were on the higher side, but these are deluxe desserts. The coffee was good and fairly priced at $1.25 (50 cent refills) This is a very nice addition to the neighborhood. I wish them well!
