Scott Howard

Ended up at Scott Howard ( last night with a few friends. Overall, found the food a bit disappointing, and the service pretty poor. Going through what I ate, cutting and pasting from their online menu where possible:

Smoked Salmon
Yukon potato cake • Green apple • Creme fraîche
Overall, this just didn't seem to hold together well for me. While the salmon itself was tasty (but then again, when is smoked salmon not, haha), the flavors of the dish just didn't seem to mesh at all.

Carrot Broth
Chervil sabayon • Black truffle oil
This may have been the highlight of the meal. Very good - basically rich, creamy essence of carrot.

Short Ribs
Horseradish potato purée • Beech mushrooms
(Note: the sides were actually different here. Instead of what was listed here, they served orzo "mac and cheese" and king trumpet mushrooms(?).)
Again, the flavors on the dish just didn't seem to mesh well. The meat itself was very good, falling-apart-tender. I had high hopes for this mac and cheese side, but it was almost artificial tasting, a little too salty, just didn't work for me The mushrooms came out pretty tough, a bit rubbery.

For dessert, I asked for the doughnuts (listed as coming with vanilla sugar, chocolate, and chilled spiced almond milk). However, they were out. I ended up splitting an order of the smores (not on online menu). Probably one of the fanciest smores preparations I've had, haha. It came out on one of those trendy long plates. One end was occupied by a round cookie base topped with a mushrooming crusty marshmellow explosion. In the center was a line of maraschino cherries. On the other end of the plate was a small scoop of graham cracker ice cream - very good, quite addictive, it was like eating a cold refreshing graham cracker without having to waste effort chewing. Overall, I think this dessert worked very well.

The service was overall pretty poor. I ordered a beer at the beginning of my meal, it didn't end up coming out until halfway through my first course. Earlier, about a half hour passed between menus being handed out and seeing a waiter again. Throughout the meal, it seemed that our waiter was nowhere to be seen. Similar delays when we were trying to pay our bill. Overall, while I don't like being rushed, the pace of things here just seemed too slow.
