Schnitzel Express

OK- I love a good schnitzel as much as anybody. I've had perfect ones in Vienna and remember my Dad telling me that he lived on them when he was stationed there during the Korean War in the 50s. My go to schnitzel place in NYC was Silver Swan (RIP) and I still love Chalet Alpina in Queens. Remember having had a good one at Wallse. Haven't found the Schnitzel Truck yet but have heard good things. So I hesitantly tried Schnitzel Express yesterday in the old City Burger space on 39th and Bway. Wanted to hate it for 3 reasons: 1. it reminded me that City Burger, a favorite, was gone; 2. I was skeptical as it was glatt kosher ('under the supervision of Vaad Harabbonim" who may know the Talmud but not the optimum frying temperature of schnitzel); 3. just chicken rather than pork (see reason 2) or veal. The classic "Israeli" schnitzel came on a soft baguette with some nice fried onions and pickles and lettuce (even though I told them to hold the lettuce). It was rather small for $10 but I have to admit the chicken was perfectly fried and fresh. May be worth another shot particularly if you customize the toppings, e.g. hot peppers.
