Schat’s in Cloverdale

SvL asked: “There used to be a couple of decent restaurants in Cloverdale, but I haven't been there in over a year. How is the dining scene there these days? Anything to recommend?”

Too late for his visit, still I want to mention that one of the fabulous Schat offspring opened a bakery in Cloverdale last November. Other branches of this master baking family operate in Bishop, Mammoth, Ukiah, Fort Bragg, Calistoga, and maybe elsewhere.

The first weekend it was open, I sent my guests into town to pick up breakfast pastries there. They brought back a big tray packed with just about every item available. And, while not part of the assignment, the breads looked so good to them, they bought a few loaves too for good measure. We thought everything was good. At first glance, the cinnamon rolls, for example, look like the oversized supermarket variety. But when you bite into them, there’s heft with real integrity of texture and flavor. The bakery grinds its own flour. Breads are rustic style, reflecting Dutch roots. My freezer is packed with day-olds - the whole wheat rolls are great to have on hand.

The only thing I haven’t liked so far is the pizza bread. The sauce is too sweet and jam-like for my taste and the cheddar cheese doesn’t work for me.

Closed on Sundays.
