Scam in Santa Monica

Frank | Jul 16, 2004 01:50 AM

Oh, excuse me. Did I say scam? I meant Sham on 7th and Santa Monica.

I've read many proud reviews from this board of this place, Sham, which prompted 3 of us to have dinner there tonight. Tonight, however, I feel I got ripped off.

Getting in was no problem. Although we were seated next to the speakers from where the sounds of the keyboardist tinkered away while belly dancers pranced around for tips. The music was so loud and annoying; we weren't able to hold any form of conversation.

I ordered the chicken breast skewers ($11.95). The menu mentioned an array of side orders which are included: rice, salad, soup, mixed vegetables. I opted for the lentil soup and mixed vegetables.

The deep, deep bowl of soup came out in no time at all. But, for me very under whelming. It's more like a lentil soup puree. Not the hearty style, evident in Persian restaurants.

The chicken followed soon after, with a mish-mosh of onions and bell peppers (supposedly the mixed vegetables?). I found the chicken competently prepared, but nothing special at all-- perhaps a tad on the bland side.

All in all, I thought it was a lot of mediocre food for $11.95. Until... I got the bill. On Thursday nights, Sham restaurant has a special where everything on the menu is $20.00. And that's to cover the band and the entertainment.

No one mentioned this to us before we ordered. One of ther servers pointed out to us a little card on the menu. Of the three of us, not one of us noticed that we were being charged a cover charge. The print was so tiny against the dark background of card.

When I asked the server why no one told us, he said he thought we'd known. And, Sham has been offering this evening for 3 months. There were no special signs or mentions of this cover charge, except for the tiny letters on the little card.

Had I known that, I would have gone to Baja Fresh down the street. At least I know what I'm paying for.
