I was at a barbecue yesterday and, as is my reputation at such things, I eventually manned the grill. I was extremely impressed with the meat our host had provided -- marinated tri-tip, LOTS of it, in a big bag full of red marinade. The meat was tender as can be when grilled to medium rare, and the marinade gave it a juicy, tangy flavor without being intrusive. The cuts themselves carved easily into thin slices and had just the right balance of fat to meat. My friend told me he got it at Scalise Bros. in Alameda, where he'd been buying meats for years. Anyhow, highly recommended based on my one experience. Since I've been to Alameda only three times in my life, I'd be interested in hearing others' perspective on Scalise -- is this an exceptional butcher shop, or was my experience just dumb luck?
