I just moved to Portsmouth a couple of months ago and am getting used to the area. I have been very surprised by the high quality, interesting menus, and reasonable prices of the restaurants here in Olde Towne Porstmouth: The Lobscouser, Brutti's, The Bier Garten, The Cheshire, and China Garden isn't even bad considering it's a buffett!
But, after hearing about Scale O' De Whale on NPR Friday (where I heard about this site), I ventured a little further out. Despite the hype, it was a huge let down . . . more expensive than here in Olde Towne and poor food quality. The appetizer of crab stuffed mushrooms featured cheap, canned mushrooms topped (not stuffed) with an over-salted crab dip. The bread, clearly from frozen dough, was freezer burnt, and the steamed vegetables accompanying my meal were pasty and pale. The entrees were passable, but nothing to brag about. And, considering the failure elsewhere, I don't think I'll be back for a while.
I can give them credit for excellent service, a great view, and a very good side salad. Makes me wish everything else would have been better!
