Just back from a vacation to Sayulita, a little 'surf community' in the state of Nayarit, Mexico. Ended up being one of the best culinary excursions I've had - perhaps second to New Orleans in just sheer volume of enjoyable, fresh local food.
Some pics are attached that hopefully do justice, but more needs to be said about the clean, fresh food in this friendly, colorful beach town. Some local delicacies & highlights included:
tostadas de pulpo (octopus)
tacos de dorado (mahi mahi)
callo de acho (scallop) ceviche
tacos de marlin
Also fresh tuna, camarones (shrimp) & snapper. Ironically, the only thing I didn't see on the menus were cangrejo (crab), which was odd since they were ubiquitous in the rocks on the beaches.
There was also one really nice chicken-only spot that had a truly delectable sauce with the perfect amount of spice, served with slaw & rice.
Cost is minimal and the current exchange ratio is 16-1, so you're paying less than or right around $1 for a fresh fish taco (and about the same for an ice cold cerveza). Absolutely awesome food journey.
