Savory desserts

I was just at a wedding (out of town) and seated next to one of Palo Alto's accomplished pastry chefs.

The rehearsal dinner was an elaborate buffet, including lots of focus on the local seafood and some traditional English dishes. When dessert time rolled around, I did what I usually do and stayed put to finish my wine and have a coffee. My knowledgeable neighbor got up, walked to the buffet, and came back with a smallish serving of roast beef and scalloped potatoes in white. The potatoes weren't perfect, but the roast beef nearly was, and it seemed like an ideal dessert.

So my question is: where in the Bay Area can you find a place with a wide range of savory plates at dessert? I know that cheese plates -- inevitably involving a lot of sugar in fruity form -- are fashionable. Should one just return to the appetizer list for dessert? But the appetizers rarely have enough starch. Just ask for a side?
