Savoia - not so good

binkis | Aug 9, 2005 11:29 PM

My fiancee and I had dinner at Savoia tonight. We went in because the menu looked good and the place was crowded (usually a good sign).

From the moment we walked in, the staff was flippant and unaccommodating. We only received bread when we asked for it (had to ask twice) and when i asked for a glass for the beer i ordered, it was handed to me with an eye roll. Throughout the entire night, the maitre'd walked in circles around the floor, never once stopping to ask a table how things were or if they needed anything. After we were served our food, he took a stroll in our direction, but then stopped and continued his aimless circling.

I must say the bread was good and the fact that they give you a carafe of water is a nice touch. (Why don't more places do that??) But the food was downhill from there. The arugula salad was bland, with too much oil and in need of salt or lemon or some other acidic flavor. My beet and goat cheese salad was similar, though the cheese was quite good.

I had the hangar steak, which was fine, but it was served with a cauliflower...uh...mash something that was unappealing to look at, though it tasted OK. The pizza with the spicy italian meat was soggy, though the spicy meat was delish.

After we were done, without offering us dessert, the check was left for us. We're certainly not returning, but here's hoping our experience was unique, as I've seen positive messages about the place posted here...
