Thanks to this board for great suggestions!
We did do the buffet lunches $13 each at both Mrs. Wilkes and The Lady-both experiences and chow were fine. Go early. The okra was fine at Mrs. Wilkes and not available at The Lady. The Lady had ribs the day we were there. Mrs. Wilkes is family-style and The Lady is buffet.
We did find Angel's in the alley (21 W Oglethorpe Ln) as described and found the barbecue - pork and chicken - tasty and cheap about $5 for a sandwich.
Leopold's ice cream was luscious 212 E Broughton. Gelatoooh I can't comment on the gelato but the sorbet was ok - not as fine, to my mind, as ciao bella or laboratorio in NYC where I live.
On the River Street Walk, we tried Tubby's and Huey's.
Huey's gumbo was good. Tubby's fresh fish was divine-perfectly done. We liked being outside withheat lamps and music. Tubby's is right atop Huey's.
I cannot recommend the breakfast at the Inn of Ellis Sq. where we stayed. I had not great coffee and cold cereal. An alternative for eat-in or take out: B. Mattheiu's Bekery & Eatery 325 E Bay--huge cinnamon buns, teeth-achingly sweet fudge pie & other baked goods and fine coffee.
