Saturday Morning Finley Farmers Market (Kelseyville, Lake County)

Melanie Wong | Aug 29, 201301:30 AM

Last weekend I had a chance to return to the certified farmers market on the grounds of Steele Winery in Finley (near Lakeport on Clear Lake). I mentioned my visit last year here,

While not a large market, this one is very complete. As far as I could tell, all the producers selling here are from Lake County and the range includes honey, olive oil, cheese and meats in addition to dewy fresh produce. WIC and SNAP EBT are welcomed here.

Some of the things I bought:

F & G Farm – Fragrant Muscat grapes and an enormous cluster of thin-skinned, small-berried Thompson seedless grapes of an old-fashioned clone that has great flavor. These folks also grow other grape varieties, such as Concords, and have berries and vegetables too.

Morgan Valley Produce – After last year’s incredible Charentais melon, I made a beeline here, picking up a couple more charentais, as well as Kazahk and Collective Farm Woman melons. This backyard grower pumps out 1,200 pounds of melons from just 8/10 of an acre and only sells here.

Sky Hoyt – The long-lasting onion type I bought last year wasn’t available yet. Instead, I picked up four other varieties to play: Chianti, Timon, Pumba, and New Mexico Casper.

Wildcat Bees – The raw honey is segregated by depth of color, which in turn is related to elevation. After tasting all three types of wildflower honey, I preferred the middle tier with deep spice elements and chocolate notes. Only $15 for 2 pounds.
