new Saturday farmer's market

Hungry Celeste | Jun 9, 200305:39 PM

A new addition to the local lineup of farmers' markets is the German Coast Farmers' Market, just off of River Road in Destrehan at Ormond Plantation. Held from 8 am to noon every Saturday, it's an open air market with primarily local produce. Last Sat, I saw the usual June array of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, squash, etc. but also new potatoes, several varieties of mushrooms, that wonderful creole cream cheese from Mauthe's, jams, jellies, blueberries, and more. The best part: wild Des Allemands catfish for $5/lb, fresh softshell crabs for $2/ea, and jumbo lump crabmeat for $12/lb, direct from the fisherman.
