Saturday Afternoon Lunch at Dough

Since we were less than an hour from San Antonio, we decided to make the trek to Dough for a late lunch as we've heard great things about it.

We arrived around 1:00 and were lucky to be seated immediately. Shortly thereafter, I noticed only a seat or two left at the bar. I understand that they have acquired the space next door but right now the place is tiny and cramped with additional seating outside on the sidewalk of the strip center.

First off, the food was very, very good. We started with the burrata caprese which is House-made mozzarella filled with a mascarpone-ricotta-truffle oil filling and heirloom tomatoes. Ours was served with pesto, fresh basil, olive oil and flatbread. I thought it was just OK, a bit bland, until I added a bit of the fresh basil... took it over the top... DELICIOUS.

After that, we ordered the Pizza Napolena Margherita STG: Tomato sauce, mozzarella di bufala, parmigiano reggiano, basil and, prompted by our waiter, we added caramelized onions and roasted mushrooms. It was very delicious and the mostly crispy. slightly charred crust is one of the best I've had. The toppings were fresh and delicious as well.

Hubby had a small carafe of a red wine which he really enjoyed.

Downsides... pretentious service and way overpriced.

Our waiter was not a bad waiter - he was prompt and somewhat pleasant but the canned shpeel and hype he spouted was annoying and very, very pretentious. Clearly when we told him we'd come from Austin just to try the place he had to know that we already knew a bit about the place but he started on and on and on about the recognitions, TV shows, magazine articles, Italian Government certification, rated in top 25 in the whole entire world (exaggerating)... don't call an Italian wine a cabernet... (the wine part was condescending from the waiter and unappealing).

Then the bill... oh the bill... we laughed half the way home. For our strip center lunch of the cheese app, an individual sized pizza that we shared, one iced tea and the glass and a half sized carafe of wine the bill came to $75.... plus 20% standard tip. Yes, the prices were on the menu but still, $3 for iced tea, $3 up charge for the 2 rings (not slices, rings) of onion and another $3 for the equivalent of 2.5 small white button mushrooms...those were surprises.

Will we go again, ABSOLUTELY!!! The food was fresh, creative and very delicious. I'll just tell the waiter to knock of the shpeel and order more carefully.
