Took advantage of a two and a half day weekend last weekend and drove into San Francisco to recharge my chowish and travel thristy batteries. Stayed practically across the street from the Ferry Bldg. We had great access to Bart and Muni- it was almost like having keys to the city.
Lunch for DH – too late for the Farmer’s market so he got a pulled pork sandwich from Lulu petite. I got the homemade chips. Both were very good.
Dinner – Farina - long story short couldn’t get reservations at Delfina or a space at Pizzeria Delfina so I opted for an Opentable reservation at Farina – additionally I was very curious about all the differing opinions on CH and Yelp. Hits: the focaccia w/strachinno cheese and the handkerchief pasta w/pesto.
Dessert – Tea at Samovar Tea Lounge and Ice Cream at Bi Rite Creamery. I am not a tea drinker but I love the place (had lunch there two years ago) and wanted to take DH there because he likes tea a lot. At Bi Rite I had the roasted banana ice cream and salted caramel flavors and DH had the vanilla. There are not enough adjectives to describe how good their ice cream is.
Coffee at the Ferry Bldg and brunch at Yank Sing (because it was across the street from our hotel) – Unfortunately it was too early for DH to eat so I think he was a bit overwhelmed. OTOH, I enjoyed myself because I love a big breakfast but rarely get a chance to indulge. I liked the fried tofu wrapped in seaweed that I've read about on this board, the peking duck, roast pork and soup in steamed won ton wrappers.
Late lunch – Fresca at 24th and Sanchez. DH’s appetite finally woke up as were walking through Noe Valley. We had the Ceviche Mixto, the roasted mussels w/chorizo and a braised lamb shank. DH thought the meal was outstanding; however, I was a little less impressed but I enjoyed the meal and loved the window seat and having a leisurely lunch while drinking sangrias and pisco sours.
Dinner – Salt House – almost cancelled the reservations because we were still full from earlier but decided to go anyway and eat light food. We had the shellfish plateau and the pear and bell weather farm ricotta salad. The plateau was an array of raw and steamed shellfish over ice. Very fresh and very good. The salad was probably the best salad I have had in a restaurant in a long time. The pears were warm and the ricotta was creamy. The dressing was light and had the perfect balance between acidity and sweetness. I am looking forward to going back there when we have normal appetite.
Monday morning- coffee and pastries from Frog Hollow and one last walk through the Ferry Bldg.
In retrospect I would have skipped Farina (even though it was a good meal) in favor of trying our luck w/out a reservation in the Mission. I also would have gone on an excursion before taking DH to dim sum. We had a great time and I am already planning our next trip to San Francisco.
